When we first launched The Pet Friendly House project, our vision was ambitious: build the world’s most pet friendly house completely from scratch. We imagined creating a one-of-a-kind home designed specifically around the needs of pets and their families. Every room, feature, and detail would be carefully planned to create the ultimate living experience for both people and their furry companions.
It was an exciting concept, and one that generated a lot of interest. But as the project evolved, we began to realize that the smartest path forward wasn’t necessarily starting with an empty lot and a set of blueprints.
Today, we’re taking a different approach.
Instead of building a home entirely from the ground up, we’ve decided to find a house that is already approximately 75 percent complete and transform it into what we believe can still become the world’s most pet friendly home.
Some people may wonder why we changed directions. The answer is simple: practicality, timing, and the desire to make this project more relatable and beneficial to pet owners right now.
Building From Scratch Takes Much Longer
One of the biggest reasons for the change is time.
Building a custom home from scratch involves a long list of steps before construction even begins. We would need to meet with builders, architects, designers, engineers, and contractors. Plans would need to be drawn and approved. Permits would need to be secured. Construction schedules would need to be coordinated.
Then there are the factors we can’t control.
Weather delays, material shortages, labour challenges, and unexpected construction issues can push timelines back by months. What initially seems like a straightforward process often becomes much more complicated.
By purchasing a home that is already significantly completed, we can dramatically shorten the timeline and begin implementing pet-friendly innovations much sooner.
The Real Estate Market Has Changed
When the project was first conceived, the housing market looked very different.
Today, many real estate markets are experiencing slower activity. Buyers are more cautious, inventory levels have changed, and economic uncertainty has affected consumer confidence.
In a slower market, opportunities arise that didn’t exist before. There are homes available that can be purchased and customized for less money and in less time than building from the ground up.
Rather than fighting against market conditions, we decided it made more sense to work with them.
Economic Uncertainty Matters
The global economy has faced significant challenges over the past few years.
Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, including tensions involving Iran, have created uncertainty throughout global markets. Inflation concerns, fluctuating interest rates, and rising costs have impacted businesses and families alike.
Like many organizations, we have had to evaluate how these realities affect our plans.
While we remain fully committed to creating an extraordinary pet-friendly home, we also recognize the importance of making financially responsible decisions in uncertain economic times.
We Wanted a Wow Factor—But Relatability Matters More
At the beginning of this journey, I wanted something that would completely amaze people.
I envisioned a spectacular showcase property filled with groundbreaking features that would capture headlines and demonstrate what’s possible when a home is designed entirely around pets.
But over time, my perspective changed.
Like many families today, my own family has experienced financial challenges and understands the realities of rising costs. More importantly, we realized that many pet owners are facing similar struggles.
Creating a multimillion-dollar showcase home might generate attention, but would it truly help the average pet owner?
Probably not.
Instead, we want to create a home that feels attainable, practical, and relatable. We want people to walk through the home and think, “I could actually do that in my house.”
That shift in thinking became one of the biggest reasons behind our new direction.
We’ve Never Built a House Before
There’s also another important factor: experience.
The truth is that we have never built a custom home from scratch.
While we love ambitious projects, there’s wisdom in recognizing when the learning curve may be too steep for a particular moment.
Building a custom home is a massive undertaking. Mistakes can be expensive, delays can be frustrating, and unexpected challenges can quickly multiply.
Rather than attempting to learn the entire home-building process while simultaneously creating the world’s most pet friendly house, we decided to focus on what we do best—understanding pets and identifying innovative ways to improve the lives of pet owners.
Most Pet-Friendly Features Can Be Added to Existing Homes
One of the biggest discoveries during our planning process was realizing that most pet-friendly innovations do not require a brand-new house.
Features such as pet washing stations, built-in feeding areas, dog-friendly flooring, secure outdoor spaces, hidden litter box solutions, pet storage systems, indoor play zones, and smart pet technology can all be incorporated into existing homes.
In fact, many of the most practical and useful pet-friendly upgrades are renovation projects rather than new-construction features.
That realization changed everything.
If we can create the world’s most pet friendly home by modifying an existing property, we can also show homeowners how they can implement similar ideas in their own homes.
Helping Companies Sooner Rather Than Later
Another major benefit of our new strategy is speed.
The Pet Friendly House project isn’t just about creating an incredible home. It’s also about showcasing products, services, technologies, and innovations from companies that serve pet owners.
By moving into a partially completed home and beginning renovations sooner, we can start featuring businesses, products, and partners much earlier than if we waited years for a custom home build to be completed.
This allows us to create value immediately while continuing to develop the project.
Rather than postponing opportunities until some distant completion date, we can begin helping companies reach pet owners now.
The Mission Hasn’t Changed
While our strategy has evolved, our mission remains exactly the same.
We still want to create one of the most innovative, functional, and inspiring pet-friendly homes ever built.
We still want to discover products and ideas that improve life for pets and their families.
We still want to educate homeowners about practical ways to make their homes safer, healthier, and more enjoyable for their animals.
The difference is that we now believe we can accomplish those goals faster, more affordably, and in a way that resonates with more people.
Sometimes success isn’t about sticking to the original plan. Sometimes it’s about adapting when circumstances change and finding a smarter path forward.
That’s exactly what we’re doing.
The dream of creating the world’s most pet friendly house is still alive. We’re simply taking a more practical route to get there.
