325+ Nerdy Pet Names: Geeky, Scientific and Clever Ideas

Dog with nerdy glasses

Some people name their pets Bella.

Some people name them Max.

And some people look at a six-pound cat sitting beside the router and think:

Turing.

These are our people.

Nerdy pet names can come from almost anywhere — science, computers, mathematics, astronomy, video games, superheroes, fantasy, robots, famous inventors or whatever fictional universe has consumed an unreasonable percentage of your free time.

Some are obvious.

Spock. Yoda. Groot. Einstein.

Others are wonderfully subtle.

Ada. Hopper. Quark. Vector. Kepler. Byte.

And then there’s the cat who disappeared somewhere inside the house three hours ago.

404.

Perfect.

Whether you’re naming a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster or another small creature currently interfering with your productivity, here are more than 325 wonderfully geeky possibilities.

Dogs tend to suit names with strong, distinct sounds.

A few of our favorites:

You name him Byte.

He bites you.

You tell everyone this was intentional.

Nerdy Names for Cats

Cats are different.

Cats can carry names that sound slightly more mysterious, intellectual or unnecessarily important.

They encourage it.

  • Ada
  • Bellatrix
  • Curie
  • Data
  • Echo
  • Euler
  • Fermi
  • Glitch
  • Hawking
  • Java
  • Luna
  • Matrix
  • Nebula

  • Vega
  • Zelda
  • Zero

And, of course:

404.

The cat was here.

The cat is no longer here.

You have checked upstairs.

You have checked downstairs.

You have shaken the treat bag.

Nothing.

Then 404 walks casually out of a room you’ve already searched twice.

The name is perfect.

Nerdy Names for Rabbits and Small Pets

Tiny animals give us some excellent opportunities.

  • Atom
  • Bit
  • Byte
  • Chip
  • Dot
  • Gizmo
  • Hopper — Almost too obvious for a rabbit.
  • Kirby
  • Micro
  • Nano
  • Pip
  • Pixel
  • Pi
  • Quark
  • Rocket
  • Widget
  • Yoda

A hamster named Quark?

We would absolutely support that decision.

Subtle Nerdy Names That Don’t Sound Nerdy

Not everyone wants to explain their fandom every time someone asks the dog’s name.

These work beautifully even without the backstory.

  • Ada — Ada Lovelace.
  • Alan — Alan Turing.
  • Apollo — Space program.
  • Buzz — Buzz Aldrin.
  • Clara — Doctor Who.
  • Cooper — Sheldon Cooper.
  • Finn — Star Wars.

These are especially good when you want another nerd to notice the reference without putting CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD on the veterinary paperwork.

Although we’re not saying you shouldn’t.

One-Syllable Geeky Names

Short names are particularly convenient for dogs.

  • Bit
  • Bot
  • Buzz
  • Cap
  • Chip
  • Cloud
  • Dot
  • Flash
  • Git
  • Groot
  • Han
  • Hex
  • Kirk
  • Link
  • Mac
  • Mars
  • Neo
  • Ohm
  • Pi
  • Poe
  • Q
  • Rey
  • Spock
  • Volt
  • Watt
  • Who

For the Really Committed Nerd

Sometimes subtlety is not the goal.

Sometimes you want everyone at the dog park to know exactly what kind of household this is.

  • Archimedes
  • Battlestar
  • Beryllium
  • Chewbacca
  • Coriolis
  • Dumbledore
  • Fibonacci
  • Gigabyte
  • Galadriel
  • Magneto
  • Mandalorian
  • Neutrino
  • Nightcrawler
  • Oppenheimer
  • Professor X
  • Shadowfax
  • Stormtrooper
  • Tardis
  • Treebeard
  • Ultraviolet
  • Xenophilius

The advantage of naming a dog Archimedes is that you can still call him Archie.

The advantage of putting Archimedes on the tag is that everyone understands Archie has tenure.

Should You Name Your Pet After Your Favorite Fandom?

Absolutely — but there’s a difference between loving a reference and loving the actual name.

You’re going to use it a lot.

A lot.

You may love Star Wars, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to yell QUI-GON JINN! DROP THE DEAD SQUIRREL! across a public park.

That’s why shortened versions can work so well.

Obi-Wan becomes Obi.

Chewbacca becomes Chewie.

Captain Picard becomes Picard.

Archimedes becomes Archie.

Fibonacci…

Well.

Perhaps Fibonacci remains a cat.

Cats don’t come when called anyway.

Should a Nerdy Name Be Obvious?

Not at all.

There are really two kinds of great geek names.

The first announces itself immediately:

Spock. Yoda. Tardis. Groot. Pikachu.

Everyone understands the reference.

The second works quietly:

Ada. Grace. Hopper. Kepler. Turing. Maxwell. Ruby. Vector.

Those are often our favorites because they’re good names even before you know the story behind them.

Then somebody recognizes it.

“Grace Hopper?”

Exactly.

Your people have found you.

How to Choose the Right Name

Start with the references you actually care about.

There’s no point naming your dog Spock simply because it appears on a list if you’ve never watched Star Trek.

Your favorite books, games, movies, scientific fields and technologies are better places to begin.

Then consider the pet.

A tiny animal can make a huge name hilarious.

Thanos the Chihuahua.

Hulk the hamster.

Godzilla the rabbit.

A serious-looking cat can carry Turing, Curie, Hawking or Tesla beautifully.

A goofy puppy may be much more obviously Gizmo, Byte, Chewie or Bowser.

And sometimes the pet solves the problem for you.

You adopt a rabbit.

The rabbit jumps onto everything.

You remember Grace Hopper.

Hopper.

Done.

What Is the Best Nerdy Pet Name?

We have several contenders.
