Dogs at the Gym: 10 Dogs You Meet at Every Gym

Every gym has the same people.

The guy who treats leg day like a religious obligation. The woman who spends more time setting up her phone than actually working out. The CrossFit fanatic who somehow has enough energy for another round. And the guy lying on a yoga mat who may or may not still be conscious.

Now imagine they were dogs.

An English Bulldog would obviously be the powerlifter. A French Bulldog would arrive in matching workout gear, take seventeen photos and leave without breaking a sweat. The Border Collie has already finished your workout, his workout and whatever class starts next. And somewhere near the squat rack, a Chihuahua is attempting to intimidate a dumbbell twice his size.

Some came to train.

Some came to socialize.

And at least one came entirely for the gym selfie.

Here are 10 dogs you meet at every gym.

The Powerlifter

A chalk-covered English Bulldog powerlifter takes a break beside heavy weights, wearing a lifting belt, wrist wraps and gym gear.

The English Bulldog has been training for this moment his entire life.

He arrives wearing a lifting belt, wrist wraps and enough chalk to suggest several world records are about to fall. Nobody has actually seen him complete a lift, but judging by the expression on his face, something extremely heavy happened here.

He doesn’t do cardio. He doesn’t stretch. And he absolutely does not rerack his weights.

The Treadmill Guy

A stylish Italian Greyhound struts on a treadmill in sunglasses, a tracksuit, headband and sneakers, looking more runway than workout.

The Italian Greyhound has been walking for 47 minutes and has absolutely no intention of increasing the speed.

The outfit is expensive. The headband is immaculate. The earbuds are in. And the treadmill screen is showing a beautiful coastal run he will experience entirely at 2.5 miles per hour.

He isn’t training for anything.

He just likes to get his steps in.

The Gym Influencer

A French Bulldog in pink workout gear poses for a gym selfie, complete with sunglasses, headband, dumbbell and matching water bottle.

The French Bulldog has been at the gym for 45 minutes and has completed exactly three reps.

In fairness, she’s been busy. The tripod needed positioning. The lighting was terrible. Her water bottle had to match the outfit. And nobody gets a good gym selfie on the first attempt.

She’ll post the photo later with something inspirational about discipline.

Tomorrow is a rest day.

The CrossFit Addict

An energetic Border Collie powers through battle ropes while exhausted Bulldogs collapse around the gym, clearly done with another round.

The Border Collie finished the workout eight minutes ago.

Unfortunately, nobody told him that meant he could stop. While the rest of the class is scattered across the floor reconsidering every decision that brought them here, he’s back on the battle ropes asking what’s next.

Box jumps? Absolutely. Kettlebells? Grab two.

Another round? He thought you’d never ask.

The Personal Trainer

A pug personal trainer watches closely with clipboard and whistle as a determined Bulldog presses a dumbbell on the bench.

The Pug has been watching your form for exactly six seconds and is already disappointed.

He has a clipboard, a whistle and absolutely no patience for excuses. Every rep is too fast, your elbows are wrong, and apparently whatever you just did doesn’t count.

He hasn’t demonstrated a single exercise himself.

That’s not his job. He’s here to judge yours.

Leg Day

A determined Dachshund tackles a heavily loaded squat rack, dressed in full gym gear with a lifting belt, shorts and sneakers.

The Dachshund has never skipped leg day.

This is particularly impressive considering his legs are approximately six inches long. He squats heavy, wears a lifting belt and takes his stance very seriously, despite having roughly four inches between the floor and the bottom of his shorts.

Never make fun of his legs.

He’s heard every short joke already.

The Gym Bro

A laid-back Great Dane hangs out at the gym with a basketball, headphones and streetwear, looking more ready to socialize than work out.

The Great Dane hasn’t touched a weight since he arrived.

He’s technically here to train, but he’s also got a basketball game later, three people to talk to and a playlist that apparently requires constant attention. At his height, leaning against the equipment somehow still looks athletic.

Nobody knows exactly what his workout is.

But he definitely knows everyone at the gym.

The Tough Guy

A tiny Chihuahua stares down a massive dumbbell, wearing a lifting belt and the confidence of a dog convinced size is irrelevant.

The Chihuahua has been staring at these dumbbells for five minutes.

Nobody is entirely sure whether he’s planning to lift them or fight them. The belt is tightened, the stance is set, and judging by his expression, somebody made the mistake of suggesting he start with something lighter.

That person no longer works out here.

He’ll lift them when he’s damn well ready.

Post-Workout Recovery

An exhausted Basset Hound lies flat on a gym mat after a questionable workout, looking completely committed to post-workout recovery.

The Basset Hound would like everyone to know that he has finished his workout.

What the workout involved remains unclear. There are no witnesses, his water bottle appears untouched, and he’s been lying face-down on this yoga mat for the better part of half an hour.

Please don’t ask him to move.

Recovery is an important part of fitness.

The Guy Who Actually Trains

A muscular Doberman powers through a heavy dumbbell row, dressed in sleek black gym gear and looking completely focused on the workout.

The Doberman doesn’t take selfies. He doesn’t socialize between sets. And nobody has ever seen him spend 20 minutes scrolling on his phone while occupying a bench.

He arrives, puts on his headphones and gets to work.

No drama. No excuses. No wasted reps.

Every gym has one person making the rest of us look bad.

Every Gym Has Them

Maybe your gym doesn’t have a powerlifting English Bulldog or a Chihuahua trying to intimidate a 50-pound dumbbell.

But you’ve met these people.

The influencer who somehow occupies three pieces of equipment without using any of them. The CrossFit addict asking for another round while everyone else is contemplating death. The guy who came to socialize. The personal trainer silently judging your form. And, somewhere in the corner, one deeply irritating person who actually came to exercise.

The dogs just make them easier to recognize.

And if you’re currently reading this while sitting on a bench between sets, don’t worry.

We already know which one you are.
