Whether you call them “wiener dogs,” “sausage dogs,” doxies,” or some other nickname, Dachshunds are popular and make excellent pets. They are currently the 13th most popular registered dog breed in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club.
If you like Dachshunds, you have lots of choices, too. Dachshunds come in smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired coats. They can also be standard-sized or miniature-sized. Just because they are relatively small dogs, don’t let that fool you. Dachshunds are not cute little foo-foo dogs. They were originally bred to hunt badgers – one of the fiercest of all creatures. The Dachshund would go down into the badger’s den and go face to face with these ferocious animals, so they have plenty of courage. They can also be stubborn. The Dachshund is devoted and loyal to its owner but they are not always very friendly to strangers or to dogs they don’t know. Keeping other small pets in the home can be problematic since the Dachshund may be inclined to chase them.
Dachshunds may not be the best dog if you have small children. This is a breed that needs good training and socialization from a young age. They can be snappy or destructive if they are not trained from a young age. Dachshunds also have a well-earned reputation for digging. Since part of their job was finding animals underground, digging comes naturally to the breed. It is usually difficult to stop this behavior. Some Dachshunds can also be hard to house train.
Today, Dachshunds are very popular as apartment dogs and in urban areas. The breed is also popular as a participant in Dachshund races. There are “wiener dog races” across the U.S. that draw thousands of attendees and even more people to watch. Dachshunds also participate in earthdog trials. These are events where the dogs enter tunnels like mazes hoping to find an artificial bait or live (caged and protected) rat, to fulfill their natural instincts for hunting. Many Dachshunds and their owners love these events. The dogs can earn titles as they advance and become more proficient.
