If your dogs are like most, they are front and center any time there is even a hint that food is a part of your future. Doesn’t matter if the food is something they would turn their nose up at if placed in THEIR bowl, they are pulling out all of the stops in the hopes that you’ll give in and allow them a little nibble. Yet most dog owners are very concerned about their dogs’ nutrition and only want to provide the healthiest and best foods for their beloved canine friends.
Fruit typically contains important vitamins and nutrients and are also powerhouse foods when it comes to necessary dietary fiber. However, just because a food is safe and beneficial for human consumption does not mean it offers the same advantages to our dogs. Many foods that are safe for a human diet are actually toxic to canines. Watermelon is a fruit that is much beloved by many people. It conjures up warm, fuzzy feelings of picnics in the park and hot summer days on the beach. Lately, every time you enjoy a little bit of this heavenly seasonal fruit, you’ve noticed that Fido has been begrudging you every last bite. You’re willing to share with your most faithful friend, but you can’t help but wonder, can you safely feed Fido watermelon?
What is Watermelon?
Watermelon is primarily a tropical fruit that grows well in warm climates. Tracing its origins to Africa, watermelon now takes pride of place on the tables of most homes in the summer months. Watermelon is well-suited to eating on its own as a fruit or as a sweet additive to salads, juices, and even wine.
Watermelon seeds are edible and taste delicious when baked or roasted to intensify their natural nuttiness. While the rinds of the watermelon are also able to be eaten, they are quite bitter to the taste. For this reason, most people avoid them.
Watermelon is a fruit that is comprised of 91 percent water; hence the derivation of its name. It is naturally low in both sugars and fat, making it an excellent and satisfying low calorie treat for those with an intense sweet tooth.
Is it Safe to Feed your Dog Watermelon?
If your dog displays a penchant for eating watermelon, it is perfectly acceptable to allow him to have some. However, as with all human foods, it is important to observe a few precautions. Since watermelon seeds are large enough to cause a possible obstruction in your dog’s throat, esophagus, or intestines, it is best to remove the seeds prior to allowing your dog to consume any watermelon flesh.
The rind of a watermelon can also cause issues for your dog. While there is nothing inherently toxic in the rind, they are particularly hard to digest and can lead to upset tummies and even vomiting and diarrhea. For best results, simply scoop out the flesh, remove the seeds, and discard the rinds prior to giving your dog some watermelon to enjoy.
As with all human foods given to dogs, it is best to feed watermelon in moderation. All fruits carry the potential to cause gastrointestinal distress if given too often. It is also important to realize that fruits should be given in addition to a healthy, balanced, and nutritious diet not in place of one.
Can you feed your dog watermelon? Absolutely! On a hot day, grab a slice for yourself and prepare Fido a bowl of seedless watermelon chunks to enjoy. Fido will thank you for it!
