Bigfoot, Aliens & Other Things That Scared the Living Daylights Out of 10 Dogs

Four terrified dogs flee through a moonlit forest as Bigfoot, a snarling Yeti, and mysterious aliens emerge beneath a hovering UFO.

For decades, people have searched the forests of North America for Bigfoot, trekked through the Himalayas hoping to spot the Yeti, and spent countless hours staring at grainy photographs of creatures that supposedly don’t exist. Scientists remain skeptical, eyewitnesses swear they’re telling the truth, and the rest of us are left wondering whether there’s something lurking out there that we haven’t discovered yet.

Apparently, nobody thought to send a dog.

As it turns out, our four-legged friends have been stumbling across the world’s most mysterious creatures all along. Bigfoot in the woods? Check. A monster in a Canadian lake? Naturally. Aliens visiting Earth? One unfortunate French Bulldog has a story nobody’s going to believe.

Of course, there’s one small problem. Dogs aren’t exactly known for keeping their composure when something unexpected happens. Some bark, some run, some freeze in absolute terror, and others somehow decide it’s the perfect opportunity for a selfie.

We’ve collected ten extraordinary encounters between ordinary dogs and creatures that have fascinated humanity for generations. The photographic evidence is remarkable. The dogs’ reactions are even better.

And after seeing what these poor animals went through, you might understand why your dog occasionally refuses to go outside after dark.

1. Bigfoot — The Selfie That Nearly Killed Him

A terrified Boxer snaps a wide-eyed selfie in a mossy forest as a towering Bigfoot looms menacingly behind him. Is this conversation helpful so far?

Location: Pacific Northwest, USA | Dog: Boxer

It was supposed to be a peaceful walk through the forest. A little fresh air, some interesting smells, perhaps a squirrel to chase. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Then he heard something moving behind him.

At first, he assumed it was another hiker. Possibly a bear. Maybe just a particularly overweight Labrador crashing through the bushes.

He turned around.

Standing approximately eight feet tall, covered in dark fur, and looking like he hadn’t visited a barber in several thousand years was Bigfoot himself.

Naturally, our Boxer did what any sensible dog would do when confronted by a legendary forest creature. He took a selfie.

The resulting photograph captures the precise moment his brain stopped functioning. Eyes bulging, mouth wide open, and an expression suggesting he’d just remembered every bad decision he’d ever made.

Bigfoot, meanwhile, looks mildly annoyed that someone has finally managed to take a photograph of him that isn’t blurry.

The Boxer reportedly made it home safely, although he now refuses to walk anywhere with trees.

And somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, Bigfoot is probably wondering why a screaming dog wanted a picture with him.

2. The Yeti — So Much for Mountain Rescue

A terrified Saint Bernard races through deep mountain snow, eyes bulging and mouth wide open, as a snarling Yeti charges behind him.

Location: Himalayas | Dog: Saint Bernard

For generations, Saint Bernards have been celebrated for their bravery in the mountains. Rescuing stranded travellers, battling blizzards, and fearlessly navigating some of the world’s most dangerous terrain.

Apparently, nobody included the Yeti in their training manual.

Our Saint Bernard was enjoying a perfectly respectable afternoon in the snow when he noticed something enormous moving between the mountain peaks. At first, he assumed it was another Saint Bernard. A very large Saint Bernard. One that walked on two legs and appeared to have some serious grooming issues.

Then the creature let out a roar.

And just like that, several centuries of heroic mountain-rescue tradition went straight out the window.

What followed was less a dignified retreat and more a 180-pound avalanche of pure panic. Ears flying, jowls flapping, snow exploding in every direction, our brave mountain rescuer achieved speeds previously considered impossible for a dog carrying that much body fat.

Behind him, the legendary Yeti gave chase, apparently delighted to have finally found something in the Himalayas that could run away screaming.

The Saint Bernard eventually reached safety, although witnesses say he refused to leave the lodge for three days.

His rescue career is currently on hold.

He has also requested a transfer to somewhere considerably warmer. Preferably Florida.

3. The Hibagon — Japan’s Most Awkward First Encounter

The Hibagon — Japan's Most Awkward First Encounter

Location: Mount Hiba, Japan | Dog: Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus are famous for their confidence, independence, and ability to look thoroughly unimpressed by almost anything. They can stare down a much larger dog, ignore their owner’s commands, and judge an entire room without moving a muscle.

But nobody prepared this particular Shiba Inu for the Hibagon.

Deep in the forests surrounding Japan’s Mount Hiba, our adventurous little explorer was following an interesting scent when he wandered into a clearing and found himself face-to-face with a large, hairy, ape-like creature that supposedly doesn’t exist.

The Hibagon stopped.

The Shiba Inu stopped.

For several uncomfortable seconds, neither moved.

The dog’s eyes widened. His ears stood perfectly straight. His normally smug expression disappeared, replaced by the unmistakable look of someone who had just discovered that the world was considerably stranger than advertised.

The Hibagon appeared equally confused. After decades of avoiding human contact, it had apparently never encountered a small orange dog with the facial expression of a deeply disappointed accountant.

Neither barked. Neither growled. Neither attempted to run.

They simply stood there, staring at each other, silently questioning every decision that had brought them to this particular moment.

Eventually, the Shiba Inu slowly backed away, maintaining eye contact the entire time.

The Hibagon disappeared into the forest.

Both reportedly went home convinced they’d just seen something that shouldn’t exist.

And somewhere in Japan, a legendary monster is probably telling his friends about the strangest little fox he’s ever encountered.

4. Ogopogo — Up a Lake Without a Paddle

A terrified black Labrador in a red life jacket cowers in a wooden boat as a gigantic, snarling lake monster erupts from the water behind him.

Location: Okanagan Lake, British Columbia, Canada | Dog: Black Labrador

Labradors love water. Swimming, splashing, retrieving sticks, jumping off docks — if there’s a body of water within a hundred yards, chances are a Labrador is already in it.

Our adventurous Black Lab decided to take things a step further and enjoy a relaxing afternoon rowing across beautiful Okanagan Lake.

The weather was perfect. The mountains were spectacular. The water was calm. Life was good.

Then something enormous surfaced behind the boat.

At first, he assumed it was a particularly large fish. Perhaps a sturgeon. Maybe a floating log. Nothing that couldn’t be investigated with a friendly sniff and possibly an enthusiastic tail wag.

Then the log opened its mouth.

Rising from the depths was Ogopogo, British Columbia’s legendary lake monster, complete with a serpentine neck, enormous teeth, and an expression suggesting it wasn’t particularly interested in making friends.

Our Labrador turned around, took one look, and immediately forgot everything he’d ever learned about being a water-loving retriever.

His eyes nearly popped out of his head. His mouth dropped open. His tail stopped wagging for what may have been the first time in his entire life.

And then came the truly horrifying realization.

He was sitting in a tiny wooden rowboat, several hundred yards from shore, with a prehistoric-looking monster directly behind him.

The oars were somewhere in the bottom of the boat. His swimming abilities suddenly seemed considerably less impressive. And despite years of retrieving things from the water, nobody had ever explained what to do when the water tried to retrieve him.

Fortunately, Ogopogo eventually disappeared beneath the surface, leaving our Labrador shaken, soaking wet, and questioning his lifelong enthusiasm for lakes.

He now prefers swimming pools.

The shallow end.

With a lifeguard.

5. The Skunk Ape — Even a Bloodhound Has His Limits

A terrified Bloodhound splashes through a murky swamp as a snarling, moss-covered swamp monster emerges from the water and reaches toward him.

Location: Florida Everglades, USA | Dog: Bloodhound

Bloodhounds possess one of the most extraordinary senses of smell in the animal kingdom. With approximately 300 million scent receptors, they can follow trails that are days old, track missing people across miles of wilderness, and detect smells the rest of us couldn’t imagine.

Unfortunately, nobody ever asked whether they actually wanted to smell everything.

Our Bloodhound was enjoying a leisurely investigation of the Florida Everglades when his magnificent nose picked up something unusual.

Something powerful.

Something that smelled like a combination of rotten eggs, a backed-up sewer, three weeks of unwashed gym socks, and a dead alligator that had been sitting in the Florida sunshine since Easter.

Naturally, he followed it.

After all, tracking mysterious smells is practically written into his DNA.

Then he rounded a bend in the swamp and came face-to-face with the legendary Skunk Ape, Florida’s notoriously foul-smelling cousin of Bigfoot.

The creature stood nearly seven feet tall, covered in filthy, matted hair, apparently completely unaware that it smelled like the inside of a garbage truck during a heat wave.

Our Bloodhound stopped dead in his tracks.

His nose wrinkled. His eyes began watering. His enormous ears drooped even lower than usual. For the first time in his life, a dog specifically bred to investigate smells desperately wished he didn’t have a nose.

The Skunk Ape leaned forward, apparently curious about its visitor.

The Bloodhound gagged.

The creature took another step.

The Bloodhound backed away, looking like someone had just opened a container of six-month-old leftovers directly beneath his nostrils.

Eventually, he turned around and fled through the swamp, abandoning a scent trail for the first time in his distinguished tracking career.

He reportedly spent the next four hours with his head hanging out the car window.

His owner says he’s recovering nicely, although he now refuses to investigate anything that smells even remotely suspicious.

Which, for a Bloodhound, has made life considerably less interesting.

6. The Loch Ness Monster — The World’s Most Unobservant Tourist

A cheerful Scottish Terrier snaps a lakeside selfie as the Loch Ness Monster rises from the water behind him, with a Scottish castle in the distance.

Location: Loch Ness, Scotland | Dog: Scottish Terrier

Scottish Terriers are proud little dogs. Confident, independent, and blessed with magnificent beards that make them look like retired university professors who have strong opinions about everything.

Our Scottish Terrier was particularly proud of his Scottish heritage, so naturally, a visit to Loch Ness was at the top of his holiday itinerary.

He’d heard all the stories. The mysterious sightings, the blurry photographs, the decades of tourists staring hopefully across the water. Frankly, he thought the whole thing was a load of nonsense.

But the scenery was lovely, and he needed a new profile picture.

So he found the perfect spot overlooking the famous loch, positioned himself against the beautiful Highland backdrop, and prepared to take what would undoubtedly be the finest selfie of his distinguished little life.

Chin up. Beard perfectly groomed. Ears standing proudly. One paw extended toward the camera.

Absolutely magnificent.

What he failed to notice was the enormous prehistoric-looking creature slowly rising from the water directly behind him.

There she was. Nessie herself. A long serpentine neck, enormous head, and several mysterious humps breaking the surface of the loch.

After nearly a century of questionable photographic evidence, the world’s most famous lake monster had finally decided to make a proper appearance.

And the only witness was a Scottish Terrier who was too busy admiring his own beard.

Nessie even leaned closer, apparently curious about the small, self-important creature posing on the shore.

Click.

The photograph was perfect.

Our Scottish Terrier returned home, uploaded his selfie, and proudly announced that he’d visited Loch Ness without seeing anything unusual.

Within hours, the photograph had attracted millions of views. Cryptozoologists were losing their minds. Television crews were booking flights to Scotland. Scientists were demanding access to the original image.

Meanwhile, our little Scottish Terrier was furious.

Not because he’d missed the greatest zoological discovery in modern history.

Because everyone kept commenting on the bloody monster instead of his beard.

7. Mothman — The Night the Guard Dog Needed Guarding

A wide-eyed Doberman looks terrified as the red-eyed Mothman spreads its enormous wings beneath a full moon in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

Location: Point Pleasant, West Virginia, USA | Dog: Doberman Pinscher

Dobermans have a reputation to maintain. Intelligent, fearless, fiercely protective, and capable of making a fully grown burglar reconsider his career choices with a single intimidating stare.

Our Doberman took his responsibilities particularly seriously.

Every evening, he patrolled the property with military precision. Suspicious noises were investigated. Unfamiliar vehicles were monitored. Squirrels were warned that trespassing would not be tolerated.

Then one evening, while exploring a deserted road outside Point Pleasant, he encountered something that wasn’t covered in the guard dog handbook.

Standing in the darkness was an enormous, human-shaped creature with massive folded wings and two glowing red eyes.

The legendary Mothman.

Our Doberman stopped.

His ears shot straight up. His eyes widened to approximately the size of dinner plates. Every muscle in his body went rigid.

For the first time in his life, the dog who barked at delivery drivers, vacuum cleaners, and suspicious-looking garden ornaments couldn’t produce a single sound.

Mothman stared at him.

He stared at Mothman.

Somewhere in the distance, a branch snapped.

Neither moved.

The Doberman considered his options. Barking seemed unwise. Running might attract attention. Playing dead was a possibility, although he wasn’t entirely confident he could fall over without making a noise.

Then Mothman slowly unfolded his enormous wings.

At that precise moment, our fearless security professional discovered that his legs had apparently resigned without providing two weeks’ notice.

He remained frozen in place, staring at the creature with an expression usually reserved for people who have just opened their electricity bill.

Eventually, Mothman spread his wings and disappeared into the night.

The Doberman stood motionless for another twenty minutes, just to be absolutely certain.

He returned home, climbed directly into his owner’s bed, and spent the remainder of the evening hiding beneath the blankets.

His security duties have since been reduced to monitoring the living room.

During daylight hours.

With all the lights on.

8. The Chupacabra — Finally, Someone His Own Size

A fearless Chihuahua bares its teeth at a terrifying Chupacabra in a moonlit desert, refusing to back down from the monstrous creature.

Location: Northern Mexico | Dog: Chihuahua

Chihuahuas have never been particularly concerned about their size. Weighing approximately six pounds, they routinely threaten German Shepherds, challenge Rottweilers, and behave as though every living creature on Earth owes them money.

Fear is simply not part of their vocabulary.

Our Chihuahua was patrolling a dusty rural property in northern Mexico when he spotted something unusual creeping along the fence line.

It was hairless, hunched over, with glowing eyes, sharp teeth, and a row of sinister-looking spines running down its back.

The legendary Chupacabra.

A mysterious creature blamed for attacking livestock, terrifying farmers, and occasionally draining the blood from unfortunate goats.

Most sensible animals would have turned around and run.

Our Chihuahua took one look and decided someone needed to teach this ugly little bastard a lesson.

His lips curled. His teeth appeared. His tiny body began vibrating with the kind of uncontrollable rage normally reserved for vacuum cleaners and delivery drivers.

The Chupacabra hissed.

The Chihuahua growled.

The creature exposed a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth.

The Chihuahua responded by exposing all twelve of his remaining ones.

For a moment, the two stood facing each other in the dusty Mexican countryside, looking like the world’s most terrifying disagreement between two creatures that could probably fit inside a shopping cart.

Then the Chihuahua exploded.

Barking, snarling, jumping sideways, and unleashing a level of aggression completely disproportionate to his physical dimensions, he launched into a performance that would have impressed a professional wrestling audience.

The Chupacabra, a creature that had supposedly terrorized entire villages for generations, appeared genuinely confused.

It took one step backward.

Big mistake.

Encouraged by this obvious sign of weakness, the Chihuahua advanced, barking even louder.

Within seconds, the legendary monster had retreated into the darkness, apparently deciding that Mexican goats were considerably less trouble.

Our Chihuahua returned to the house victorious, chest puffed out, tail held high, and completely convinced he’d just saved the entire country.

His owner gave him a treat.

He demanded two.

After all, monster removal isn’t free.

9. The Alien Abduction — Wrong Dog, Wrong Planet

An unimpressed French Bulldog floats into a UFO's tractor beam above Area 51 as three curious aliens oversee the nighttime abduction.

Location: Near Area 51, Nevada, USA | Dog: French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are not easily impressed. They can sleep through thunderstorms, ignore expensive toys, and look at their owners as though every decision they’ve ever made has been questionable.

Our French Bulldog was enjoying a quiet evening in the Nevada desert when a strange light appeared overhead.

At first, he assumed someone had switched on an unusually bright porch light. Then came a low humming sound, followed by an enormous flying saucer hovering directly above him.

Three small, grey extraterrestrials appeared beneath the spacecraft.

Our Frenchie stared at them.

They stared at him.

Apparently, after travelling millions of miles across the universe, the aliens had finally discovered intelligent life on Earth.

Unfortunately, they’d selected a creature that occasionally gets frightened by its own farts.

A brilliant beam of light suddenly surrounded our French Bulldog, lifting him slowly off the ground.

His little legs dangled helplessly. His ears remained perfectly upright. His expression suggested that someone was about to receive a strongly worded complaint.

The aliens watched with fascination as their extraordinary specimen floated toward the spacecraft.

The Frenchie responded by releasing a fart so spectacular that the ship’s atmospheric monitoring equipment immediately registered a biological emergency.

Within seconds, alarms were sounding. Warning lights were flashing. Three highly advanced extraterrestrials were frantically consulting their emergency procedures.

The tractor beam reversed.

Our French Bulldog was deposited gently back onto the desert floor, where he shook himself off, gave the spacecraft one final look of complete disapproval, and wandered home.

The aliens departed Earth shortly afterward.

Their official report reportedly concluded that humanity was not yet ready for interplanetary contact.

Particularly the small, flat-faced ones.

10. The Jersey Devil — The Fastest Beagle in New Jersey

A terrified Beagle races through a moonlit forest as a snarling, red-eyed Jersey Devil with enormous bat wings chases close behind.

Location: Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA | Dog: Beagle

Beagles were born to follow their noses. Give them an interesting scent, and they’ll happily disappear into the woods for three hours, completely ignoring their owners, traffic, common sense, and the increasingly desperate sound of someone shaking a bag of treats.

Our Beagle was no exception.

He’d been enjoying a wonderful afternoon exploring New Jersey’s famous Pine Barrens when he picked up a particularly intriguing smell.

Something wild. Something unfamiliar. Something that definitely wasn’t a rabbit.

Naturally, he followed it.

Deep into the forest.

Farther and farther from civilization.

Until he heard something moving in the trees behind him.

He turned around and discovered the legendary Jersey Devil — a horrifying creature with a horse-like head, enormous bat wings, glowing red eyes, and claws that looked capable of opening a can of dog food without assistance.

For approximately half a second, our Beagle considered investigating.

Then the creature screamed.

And our Beagle discovered a previously unknown sixth gear.

What followed was perhaps the most spectacular display of canine acceleration ever witnessed in New Jersey.

His ears flew straight backward. His eyes bulged. His mouth opened so wide that several insects probably flew inside without touching the sides.

Branches snapped. Leaves exploded. Mud flew in every direction.

Behind him, the Jersey Devil spread its enormous wings and gave chase, apparently delighted that something in the Pine Barrens had finally provided a little entertainment.

Our Beagle didn’t look back.

Well, he looked back once.

That was a mistake.

Seeing a winged nightmare gaining on him inspired another burst of speed that would have made a greyhound reconsider its career.

He eventually emerged from the forest, cleared a four-foot fence without breaking stride, and launched himself through his owner’s open car window.

The entire incident lasted less than three minutes.

His owner had spent the previous six years trying to teach him to come when called.

Apparently, all he needed was a legendary flying monster.

The Beagle now refuses to enter the woods, investigate unfamiliar smells, or go anywhere without a clear escape route.

And for the first time in his life, when his owner says, “Let’s go home,” he’s already sitting in the car.

The Drop Bear — Australia’s Koala With a Serious Attitude Problem

A fierce, snarling koala with sharp fangs and extended claws clings to a eucalyptus tree, resembling Australia's legendary drop bear.

Australia already has enough creatures trying to kill you. Venomous snakes, enormous spiders, crocodiles, and sharks apparently weren’t enough, so Australians decided to add something even more terrifying: a koala that drops out of trees and attacks unsuspecting tourists.

Meet the Drop Bear, a supposedly carnivorous cousin of the cuddly koala, complete with razor-sharp teeth, powerful claws, and a particularly nasty attitude. According to Australian folklore, these vicious little monsters lurk in eucalyptus trees, waiting patiently for an unsuspecting visitor to wander underneath before launching themselves from above.

Naturally, Australians have developed some highly questionable survival advice. Suggestions include smearing Vegemite behind your ears, wearing forks in your hair, or speaking with an Australian accent to avoid being targeted.

Of course, Drop Bears aren’t real. They’re one of Australia’s most elaborate practical jokes, enthusiastically maintained by generations of locals who apparently decided that terrifying tourists was a perfectly reasonable national pastime.

And considering what actually lives in Australia, it’s remarkable that anyone questions their existence.

Seriously Though, Your Dog Is Probably Safe

Before you cancel your next camping trip, stop taking your Labrador swimming, or refuse to let your Chihuahua outside after dark, there’s something you should know.

The chances of your dog being chased through the Himalayas by a Yeti, abducted by extraterrestrials, or eaten by the Jersey Devil are remarkably low.

In fact, despite decades of reported sightings, blurry photographs, dramatic eyewitness accounts, and television documentaries featuring men whispering in forests, nobody has produced convincing scientific evidence that any of these legendary creatures actually exist.

Which is rather surprising, considering how many of them apparently live within driving distance of a gift shop.

Some skeptics might even suggest that a few of these legends have survived because they’re excellent for local tourism. After all, nothing sells T-shirts, refrigerator magnets, and guided wilderness tours quite like an eight-foot monster that nobody can find.

We’re not saying the local tourism boards invented them.

We’re just saying Bigfoot has probably generated more souvenir revenue than most small-town chambers of commerce.

Of course, dogs don’t care about scientific evidence. They’ll happily bark at an empty corner, refuse to walk past a suspicious garbage bag, or become absolutely convinced that the neighbour’s garden gnome is plotting something sinister.

And perhaps that’s the real lesson here.

You don’t need Bigfoot lurking behind a tree to terrify a dog. Sometimes all it takes is a vacuum cleaner, an unexpected cucumber, or a plastic bag blowing across the driveway.

So enjoy your walks, explore the great outdoors, and don’t worry too much about legendary monsters.

Just remember to bring your camera.

Because if Bigfoot ever does make an appearance, there’s a pretty good chance your dog will be too busy losing his mind to appreciate the historical significance.

And whatever you do, don’t let the Chihuahua handle negotiations.
