Some places seem almost too strange for cats.
Burning Man isn’t one of them.
Drop a cat into a vast desert filled with monumental art, impossible vehicles, elaborate handmade fashion, bicycles, fire, dust storms and thousands of people determined to reinvent themselves for a week, and somehow the cat may be the least unusual thing there.
So we imagined what would happen if cats made their way onto the playa.
Some came for the art. Some came for the fashion. A few appear to have taken the whole thing considerably more seriously than everyone else. And at least one has absolutely no intention of explaining where it has been since sunrise.
From dusty bicycle rides and extravagant desert couture to enormous installations, glowing nights and quiet moments beneath an endless Nevada sky, these are the cats of Burning Man.
Naturally, they fit right in.
The Arrival

A Sphynx arrives on the playa looking considerably more prepared than most first-timers. Wrapped in weathered black fabric, leather and metal, with oversized goggles already in place, the cat stands beside a dust-covered mutant vehicle as the sun drops toward the Nevada mountains. The bicycle is waiting, the desert stretches for miles, and somewhere out there Burning Man has already begun.
The Playa Cyclist

A Bengal has discovered the unofficial rule of Burning Man: eventually, everyone ends up on a bicycle. Dressed in layered desert fabrics, battered goggles and enough handmade jewelry to rattle with every turn of the pedals, the cat races across the open playa with dust trailing behind. There is no destination in sight, which appears to be entirely the point.
The Burner Crew

Nobody remembers exactly how this group found one another, but by sunset they are crossing the playa like they arrived together. Five cats, five completely different interpretations of desert fashion, and not a practical outfit among them. Against the open Nevada sky, they look less like a group of lost festival-goers and more like the strangest fashion collective Burning Man never knew it needed.
The Art Pilgrim

Somewhere beyond the camps and bicycles, a Persian has found what it came for. Beneath a monumental desert sculpture, the cat looks almost impossibly small against the open playa, its elaborate clothing reduced to a few beautiful details in the distance. There is no crowd and no performance here—just art, dust, mountains and one very quiet cat taking it all in.
The Dust Storm

The playa has disappeared, and a black cat is walking straight through what remains of it. Wrapped in pale, wind-whipped fabric with goggles pulled tight against the dust, the cat emerges from the haze as little more than a dark silhouette against an almost colourless desert. No art. No crowds. No sunset. Just wind, dust and a cat that apparently has somewhere very important to be.
The Fashion Burner

For some cats, Burning Man is about radical self-expression. For this Oriental Shorthair, apparently that means treating the playa like a couture runway. Handmade ivory goggles, layers of distressed linen and gauze, antique metal jewelry and beautifully impractical details turn a simple walk across the desert into a fashion editorial. No spectacle is required. This cat brought its own.
The Night Creature

Some cats wait for the sun to disappear before Burning Man really begins. A sleek Bombay moves through the darkness beneath an illuminated art installation, its black coat catching flashes of electric blue, violet and firelight. Tiny lights are woven through its elaborate desert clothing, but most of the playa has vanished into blackness. Out here, after midnight, the cat looks completely at home.
The Morning After

By sunrise, the playa belongs to a completely different crowd. A silver Maine Coon sits beside a dust-covered bicycle beneath a pale blue-grey sky, wrapped loosely in yesterday’s elaborate desert layers. The goggles have been pushed onto its forehead, the crowds have disappeared, and somewhere behind the distant mountains the first hint of pink is beginning to show. Whatever happened last night, this cat isn’t discussing it.
The Tea Camp

Not every moment on the playa requires movement. Beneath a low shade canopy, a round-faced British Shorthair has claimed a pile of faded rugs and cushions while someone prepares tea nearby. Its elaborate desert wardrobe has been loosened, the goggles are off, and one paw rests beside a tiny metal cup. For the first time all day, absolutely nowhere needs to be gone.
The Temple Cat

At the far edge of the playa, a Siamese has found a quieter ending. It sits alone before a towering wooden temple, its elaborate desert layers dusty and partially undone after days in the sun. The goggles rest on the ground beside it. No bicycle. No crowd. No performance. Just a small cat beneath an enormous structure, watching the last light disappear across the desert.
The Mouse

There are moments when even a cat has to admit it may have underestimated the situation. Somewhere across the playa, an enormous mechanical mouse rolls out of the dust carrying a small crowd of humans on its back. Our cat simply sits and watches. Burning Man has produced many strange things over the years, but from a cat’s perspective, somebody has finally built something that makes complete sense.
What Is Burning Man?
Burning Man is an annual gathering held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, where participants temporarily create Black Rock City — a community built around art, creativity, participation and radical self-expression.
For one week, the empty playa becomes home to enormous art installations, elaborate theme camps, bicycles, performances, handmade fashion and extraordinary vehicles known as mutant vehicles. Much of what exists there is created by the people who attend, which is why Burning Man can look less like a traditional festival and more like an entirely different civilization that appeared in the desert overnight.
At the end, much of it disappears.
The art comes down. The camps are dismantled. The bicycles leave. The desert becomes desert again.
As far as we know, cats have yet to establish their own camp at Black Rock City.
After putting this collection together, we’re considerably less confident that they couldn’t.
