There are some ideas that make perfect sense from the beginning. Fish wearing hats is not one of them.
And yet, once you see a grumpy grouper balancing a tiny bowler hat on its enormous head or a magnificent betta swimming around beneath an extravagant floral creation, it becomes surprisingly difficult to argue against the concept.
So we decided not to.
This collection celebrates the completely unnecessary art of putting hats on fish—from cowboys and captains to chefs, aristocrats and some very questionable underwater fashion choices. The fish themselves, naturally, will be taking the whole thing extremely seriously.
Here are 20 fish in hats that nobody asked for, but we’re very glad exist.
1. The Cowboy

There’s a new sheriff in the aquarium, and he does not appear interested in discussing the matter. Hovering just above the sandy bottom in a battered cowboy hat, this tough-looking Oscar has the grim, unblinking stare of a gunslinger who’s just pushed through the saloon doors. The hat is absurd. His commitment to the role is absolute.
2. The Fancy Lady

Elegance is apparently not limited by species. Draped in spectacular flowing fins and crowned with an enormous vintage floral hat, this extravagant Betta looks as though she has arrived for an underwater fashion editorial and expects everyone else to keep up. The flowers echo the colors and sweeping shapes of her fins so perfectly that, against all reason, the entire ensemble starts to look intentional.
3. The Tiny Bowler

There are few things more dignified than a proper black bowler hat, and few things less dignified than discovering yours is approximately twelve sizes too small. This enormous, deeply unimpressed Grouper wears his tiny hat with the grim determination of a gentleman who knows everyone is staring but refuses to give them the satisfaction of acknowledging it. The proportions are completely wrong. His expression suggests that you are.
4. The Captain

The crew has disappointed him again. Floating against the open blue water in a proper old-fashioned captain’s hat, this stern Pufferfish has the weary expression of a seasoned commander who has seen every possible form of nautical incompetence and no longer intends to tolerate excuses. He may be round, small and objectively adorable, but this is clearly his ship—and everyone aboard is on very thin ice.
5. The Birthday Fish

Nobody knows whose birthday it is, least of all him. Peeking out from a riot of colorful coral in a crooked little homemade party hat, this wide-eyed Clownfish has the unmistakable expression of someone who arrived expecting a normal Tuesday and has suddenly been told there will be singing. The hat is slightly wonky, clearly handmade and entirely too earnest—which somehow makes the whole situation even better.
6. The Top Hat

Somewhere beneath the surface, this distinguished Angelfish has an important engagement at eight. Gliding through a dark, beautifully planted aquarium in a tall black top hat, he has the impeccable composure of a Victorian gentleman who considers punctuality, proper manners and exceptionally long fins matters of equal importance. Nothing about the situation makes sense, yet he carries himself with such quiet sophistication that the hat begins to feel strangely non-negotiable.
7. The Sombrero

Technically, there is a fish in this photograph. Somewhere beneath an enormous sombrero, a tiny bright face peers cautiously out from under the brim, apparently unaware that his hat has consumed nearly the entire composition. Whether he chose it for the dramatic proportions or simply ordered the wrong size is unclear. Either way, he seems committed to making it work.
8. The Chef

The kitchen is closed, the specials are final, and he will not be taking questions. Wearing an impossibly tall white chef’s toque with complete professional seriousness, this Pufferfish has the stern concentration of a celebrated chef moments before service. There is no kitchen, no food and absolutely no evidence that he can cook. None of this appears to concern him.
9. The Fisherman’s Hat

There is something deeply unfair about making a fish dress for wet weather. Wearing a battered yellow sou’wester and looking thoroughly miserable about the arrangement, this solemn little fellow has the exhausted expression of someone preparing for a long day at sea despite already living in it. The irony is magnificent. His enthusiasm is nonexistent.
10. The Crown

To be fair, this one already looked royal. With its spectacular striped fins fanned around it like ceremonial robes and a small ornate crown resting perfectly on its head, this magnificent Lionfish appears entirely comfortable with the responsibilities of the throne. There is something almost annoyingly convincing about the whole portrait. Apparently, the kingdom has a ruler—and we are all expected to bow.
11. The Beret

With its tiny beret tilted at precisely the right angle, this delicate Discus looks less like an aquarium fish and more like an intellectual who has strong opinions about modern art. Surrounded by lush aquatic plants in a beautifully moody tank, it drifts through the scene with quiet sophistication and just enough self-importance to suggest it may be judging everyone else’s taste.
12. The Viking

Approximately six inches of pure intimidation, this chunky little lumpfish has arrived for battle in a horned Viking-style helmet that wildly overstates the threat level. With its wonderfully stout body, determined expression, and complete lack of awareness that nobody is frightened, it has all the confidence of a legendary Norse warrior—and considerably less reach.
13. The Sun Hat

Gliding beneath the surface of a peaceful garden pond, this beautiful Koi has apparently decided that direct sunlight is simply not acceptable. Its enormous floppy summer hat provides an impressive amount of shade for a fish that already lives underwater, while the warm rays filtering through the pond give the whole scene the serene elegance of a luxury summer campaign nobody thought to question.
14. The Detective

Nobody knows what happened in this aquarium, but this fish definitely knows more than it’s letting on. Emerging slowly from the shadows in a tiny fedora, it has the deeply suspicious expression of a detective who’s been working the case all night—and has already decided the shrimp are hiding something.
15. The Graduate

Years of swimming in circles have finally paid off. Wearing a tiny mortarboard and posing with the solemn dignity of someone about to receive an advanced degree in absolutely nothing, this Goldfish looks appropriately proud of its academic achievement. Please hold your applause until all graduates have crossed the tank.
16. The Explorer

Armed with nothing but curiosity and a wildly unnecessary safari hat, this little explorer is venturing boldly into the uncharted territory behind the aquarium rocks. Every plant is a new discovery, every crevice demands investigation, and absolutely nobody has had the heart to tell it that the entire expedition is taking place in a tank.
17. The Winter Hat

Living in warm tropical water has not stopped this fish from dressing for a blizzard. The chunky knitted hat and enormous pom-pom are providing absolutely no practical benefit whatsoever, but judging by that expression, this fish would prefer you keep your opinions about its winter wardrobe to yourself.
18. The Fascinator

Some fish attend the races. This fish arrives to be photographed. Wearing an outrageously elaborate fascinator with feathers, flourishes, and absolutely no concern for subtlety, it has somehow transformed the aquarium into the social event of the season. The hat may be doing most of the work, but the attitude is entirely its own.
19. The Construction Worker

Someone has to deal with all those rocks, and apparently this Cichlid drew the short straw. Hovering beside the stonework in a tiny yellow hard hat, it has the weary, no-nonsense expression of a fish that has been on the job since sunrise and would really appreciate it if everyone stopped rearranging the gravel.
20. The Hat That REALLY Doesn’t Belong Underwater

And finally, a fish dressed for weather conditions it will never encounter. This enormous fur-style winter hat would be excessive during an actual Canadian blizzard, let alone on a tropical fish swimming around a reef. There is no explanation, no additional joke, and no reason for any of this. It’s simply a fish in a magnificent winter hat, and somehow that feels like the only appropriate way to end.
Well, That Got Out of Hand
And there you have it: 20 fish, 20 hats, and absolutely no sensible explanation for any of it. From tiny berets and hard hats to fascinators and wildly inappropriate winter wear, these fish have demonstrated that there is apparently no form of headwear that can’t be made funnier simply by putting it underwater. Did they need hats? Absolutely not. Are we glad they wore them anyway? Completely.
Still Not Enough Hats?
If 20 fish in ridiculous headwear somehow left you wanting more, the hat collection doesn’t have to end underwater. Head over to our Dogs in Hats collection for 20 wonderfully serious dogs in everything from cowboy hats and berets to fedoras and chef’s hats, or meet the globe-trotting felines in our Cats in Hats collection. Apparently, putting hats on animals is becoming something of a tradition around here.
